Discovering Vivian Maier

Late last year, whilst scrolling through YouTube, as I often do, I ran across a Documentary called “Finding Vivian Maier”.  It intrigued me, so I watched it and now I am a bit obsessed with her, this talented enigma, this mystery of a women with such a keen eye for humanity.

Vivian Maier was born in New York City in 1926 but grew up in France.  In the 1950’s, she returned to the United States where she worked as a nanny for the rest of her life.

That is all anybody every thought she was…a domestic - when what she really was, was an extremely talented creative - a chronicler of life through the lens of a camera.

It was only many years after her death that her photographs were discovered by a young man called John Maloof who purchased a box of her negatives from an auction house in Chicago - having no idea what he would discover.

What he uncovered was a treasure trove of some of the worlds best street photography, now shown and renown all over the world.

I could write endlessly about Vivian but I would instead encourage you to take a look at the Documentary and then order one of her books.

She is amazing.
